Original cd in jewelcase. Released on the 20th of march 2007. Musically, it harks back to their pre-breakthrough noisiness, circa this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about with lots of jagged, messy guitar parts and isaac brock shouting about rats and cars and magazines and geography and such fucking emotion that it cannot even be evaluated or explained, just a million spiky edges such that none can be caught hold of safely. The addition of johnny marr on guitar seems to have altered little, as aside from a shimmering guitar part here and there (notably on "steam engenius" with that reverberating line that sounds exactly like buzzcocks "why can t i touch it?" most of the pop trappings of good news for people who love bad news are stripped back to brief melodic contrasts. Altogether it is an interesting way of balancing the divergent sides of the band s sound although in practice it can be a bit maddening, and little of it ("steam engenius" and "dashboard" aside) has the hypnotic circularity of their best work (see pretty much the entirety of the lonesome crowded west). All that said, however, this is a pretty decent and ultimately a very fascinating album, all chaos bludgeoning itself in penance for cast-off pop sensibilities" for pure momentum is one of their most thrilling singles. "spitting venom" is a bit too huge for its own good at eight minutes, but is nevertheless a weirdly stirring song. "fire it up" clearly leans toward the nagging spiral rhythms of earlier tunes like "parking lot" but keeps pulling back the beat, leaving the song feeling dizzy and off-course, in the way that many of the songs here have of undercutting themselves. To be honest, the album is just generally not very good. Almost every song has some element in it that ruins it (especially every goddamn whooshing electronic beat they shoehorn in), and "missed the boat" is pretty much the worst song they ever wrote. Still, there is something weirdly compelling about most of these songs, and it is so permanently associated with a weird time in my life that i will always have a place in my heart for it.Disc looks great! Perfect playing guaranteed, otherwise total refund.
